The R730xd server offers a significant increase in performance over the previous generation Dell PowerEdge R720xd and significantly more storage and storage configuration options than the R730. While the R730 can handle up to 16 2.5-inch or 8 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs the R730xd supports nearly twice as much storage with up to 24 2.5-inch or 16 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs and even offers a Hybrid configuration.
The Dell R730xd server features Intel’s C610 chipset and supports either one or two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 series processors. With two processors, paired with massive amounts of storage and memory, the Dell R730xd delivers impressive performance. Embedded PCIe lanes also provide for faster IOPS. Several different chassis options are available depending on your needs for performance or storage. This rack server is extremely flexible and can quickly scale-out if you start with a single processor.
The system supports DDR4 memory and when used with certain E5-2600 v4 processors, can provide a data transfer rate of up to 2400MT/s. Each processor supports 12 of the 24 total memory sockets. There are three memory sockets per channel that support either registered (RDIMM) or load reduced (LRDIMM) modules. In a two processor configuration, up to 3.0TB of memory is available using 128GB DIMM modules.
SAS, SATA, nearline SAS SSDs, HDDs and PCIe SSDs are supported. There are three basic chassis configurations to choose from. The chassis configuration with 12 3.5-inch HDDs delivers a maximum of 99.6 Terabytes of storage. An optional Hybrid chassis supports 18 1.8-inch front accessible SATA SSDs for fast access and up to eight 3.5-inch SAS SSDs for high capacity storage, for a total capacity of 68.5TB. Internal dual-SD modules provide hypervisor redundancy for the optional embedded hypervisors using Dell’s Failsafe Virtualization technology. Several RAID controllers are available supporting a full the range of RAID options. This system is also compatible with SDS (software Defined Storage) solutions like VMware and vSAN and OpenStack.
Six PCIe 3.0 slots offer a variety of options for external devices including additional GPUs, NICs, HBAs or NAS and DAS solutions.
Management of the R730xd server is handled by iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller and Dell’s OpenManage portfolio of systems management solutions that include the OpenManage Essentials console. The iDRAC controller, embedded on the motherboard, enables out of band system management even when the system is powered off. Upgrading to iDRAC8 enterprise enables remote access using a browser. An optional Quick Sync bezel lets administrators quickly gather system information on site using a hand held tablet or device outfitted with NFC technology.
Dell’s PowerEdge R730xd server is a powerhouse suitable for a number of different compute applications. For a 2U chassis, this system supports an impressive amount of storage and memory. With three different chassis to choose from, Administrators have options when it comes to maximizing performance or storage. This server is very affordable in a minimal single processor configuration, and can quickly scale to meet your changing needs.
